Lady Sally observed how transfixed Lord Melchiot was by her voluptuous figure. She was wearing her crimson velvet dress with a huge bustle and a cameo brooch at its neck. Her black hair was tied up, and perched on top of it was a fascinator decorated with two pheasant feathers. The dress was demure, in its way, but its modesty was belied by the sensuality of the figure occupying it. The dress was cut so expertly that it hugged Lady Sally’s hour glass figure. It was the kind of modesty that enticed an admirer into speculating what pleasures awaited beneath the thick velvet. She noticed Lord Melchiot ogling her magnificent bust as she leaned over him with the sugar tongs.
“One lump, or two?” she asked.
“Two, please,” mumbled Lord Melchiot.
He held out the cup; from Lady Sally’s Ming dynasty tea service. Two sugar cubes plopped into the tea.
“Lord Melchiot, I know you are a gambling man. I will offer you a little wager. I propose a game of poker. If I win, well, you are aware of my predilections, I will require that you submit to whatever punishment I desire. If you win, then I will provide you with a demonstration of my automaton horse. How does that sound, as a wager to make our afternoon a little more interesting?”
Lord Melchiot laughed, “Your Ladyship, that hardly seems a fair deal. Indeed, I seem to recall the offer of viewing your clockwork horse was part of your invitation.”
“Of course, you are quite right, your Lordship. I can see I must offer something more alluring to entice you into my game. I shall raise the stakes. If I lose, then I will permit you to take me to my bedchamber and let you have your way with me. It’s rare that I offer my body up in this way. Is this not a tempting offer?”
“That sounds rather more interesting,” he agreed, his eyes lighting up lasciviously at the prospect of an afternoon of sex with her.
Lady Sally’s maid gasped, “But madam…”
“Hush, Victoria, don’t be such a fuss-pot. I shall rather enjoy the adrenaline of the risk I think.”
“Yes, I agree to your terms—but I will make one stipulation.” Lord Melchiot added, “The wager should be based not on one game, but best of five. Anyone can win a game with the right hand and some luck, but it takes skill to win a series. You do know that I’m an expert poker player, your Ladyship?”
“Yes, of course.” Lady Sally had done her homework and knew of his prowess at the card table. “I trust those odds would make my proposal more appealing to you. So you will join in my little bet?”
Lady Sally smiled. She knew appealing to Lord Melchiot’s vanity would pay dividends. How could he turn down a game of poker with a mere woman? He would be the laughing stock at his club if word got out that he was afraid of losing a game of cards to a weak female.
