He caught himself and swallowed, his voice softening “So you see I can’t let anyone off. We have to be seen to uphold the law at all times. With my father away I’m the one in charge. It’s expected,” he added, barely above a whisper.

Tears now coursed freely down Marella’s cheeks. “But I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she insisted, “I ran away from my minder. Oh God, why did I do that?” Through her watery eyes she saw him falter, a furrow in his brow. When he spoke again his voice had softened.

“We must get to the truth of things,” he mumbled, deflated. He reached out a hand like someone reaching for comfort. His finger-tips brushed her robe and she could smell the scent she had waited for, skin and fur and sweat. Marella’s muscles twitched and he glanced up to read her expression. When he saw no fear, he reached inside to stroke the bare skin of her stomach. Marella sighed softly, the iron cuffs holding her immobile as a lover’s restraint.

His touch traced a line down to her pelvis. He reached behind her and slowly untied the lace of her robe, her heartbeat increasing with each tug until the material fell to the ground, exposing her to the cool air. Marella breathed in deeply; her fear churned and mixed with other senses becoming something new, something that warmed her lips and toes and blood and made her lower parts tingle. He paused a moment before completing his journey, then brushed his fingers against her private lips.
