Annemarie Fitch has it all. She has a great job at The Sentinel, the swankiest hotel in town, and is about to marry her sexy fiance, Richard Samson. Everything is perfect until Richard suddenly gets cold feet, saying he needs time to think. Perhaps Richard is distracted from their wedding plans by Lilah, Annemarie’s carefree, bisexual, polyamorous best friend.

When a distressingly attractive record company executive named Zachary Link starts hitting on her, Annemarie finds herself torn between temptations and suspicions. The ring on Zach’s finger has Annemarie contemplating unexplored alternatives.

Lilah is similarly torn, feeling guilty drawn towards Richard, and inexplicably attracted to the shy baker, Chad, who works in her pastry kitchen at the Sentinel. Lilah isn’t used to hesitating about her desires, but Chad is monogamous, and Richard is, well, Richard. Is she ready to give up her other lovers if either of them return her interest? What if they both do?!

Annemarie and Lilah find themselves understanding each other more, as their lives and lovers grow ever more complicated.

People say there’s no such thing as a perfect life and that women can’t have it all. I’ve made it my mission to prove them wrong. Of course I know that perfection is subjective, based on the desires, hopes, and dreams of the individual. My definitions were always the traditional ones—a good job, a gorgeous husband with a good job, a beautiful house, travel, friends, and eventually (very eventually, and maybe) a family.

My practicality put me right on track, but is life ever predictable? I thought so, once. Now, things are different. Lilah is still shaking her head, but I’ve learned not to be surprised by much of anything, even her.

That took me a while. I knew Lilah and I didn’t have a lot in common, but I had no idea how different we were until she answered my ad on the hotel bulletin board and became my roommate. Don’t get me wrong, she’s my best friend and I love her dearly, but our lifestyles were polar opposites. I, for example, after man shopping for quite a while, had become laser focused on snagging Richard. Lilah was focused on anyone, man or woman, she could lure into bed. That might have been a problem, but fortunately, I have a white noise machine that spared me the sound effects.

I needled Lilah about her escapades, but they never really bothered me, nor did they interest me—much. Eventually that all changed, but the day we went shopping for Lilah’s maid of honor dress, I was still in fantasy land.
