Jere was wandering about, wishing he could go home already. He forced himself to walk around, talking with people that seemed friendly, avoiding the ones that seemed cruel. He was making his way across the room when he saw Arae again, looking terrified as she stood next to an older man with his hands entirely under her shirt. Well, what there was of it, anyway.

Jere couldn’t help but be disgusted. The man was slobbering drunk and clearly hurting her. She twisted and squirmed, but this only seemed to incite the man, who responded by pinching her viciously while laughing with his friends.

“I think I’ll have a piece of you tonight, slave,” he snickered, drawing a whimper from her. “You can come on up to that spare room with me—make last time look like a romantic walk in the park!”

Arae was in tears. “Please, sir, you’d have to ask my mistress….”

“She won’t turn me down!” the man insisted lecherously, “Little Annika would never turn down her dear old Uncle Walden!”

Jere couldn’t take it. He stepped over, next to the pair. “Um, excuse me, sir?” He was certain that Wren wouldn’t have approved of his social awkwardness.

The man looked at him with an eyebrow raised. “Mister doctor man,” he replied, quite congenially.

“Uh… yes, yeah, um, that’s me,” Jere tried to laugh. Fortunately, the other man was fairly intoxicated. “Jeremy Peters, very nice to make your acquaintance.”

“Walden Wysocka, same to you!”

They shook hands, although Jere would rather not have touched the man.

“You come all the way over here to talk with an old man you’ve never met before?” The man burst out laughing.

Jere tried not to roll his eyes. He did his best to act charming, and more importantly, acceptable for a slave state. “Actually, I came over here to collect my entertainment for the night.” He inclined his head toward Arae, who was looking at him with big, shocked eyes. “I do hate to step on any toes, but Annika offered her to me earlier, and I don’t want the girl out slutting around when I could be having my fun with her.” Jere wanted to be sick at the words coming out of his mouth, not to mention the act he was hinting at.

The man held up his hands and took a stumbling step backwards. “No, no, not stepping on any toes, Doctor! I didn’t realize she’d been offered up to anyone. You take her, you’ll appreciate her more! Youthful stamina and all that.”

“Yeah… stamina. Probably gonna be busy all night….” Jere forced himself not to shudder.

“Eh, I should probably be headed home anyway. The wife wonders, you know?” the man laughed, snorting a bit. “Unless you want to spare an old man a quick few minutes with her?”

Jere didn’t think, he just grabbed Arae’s arm, pulling her close. “Sorry, I’m gonna take this opportunity while it’s here,” he rushed to say. “Nice meeting you!”

He pulled Arae with him, trying to ignore the fact that she was clinging to his arm like he was the last life preserver on a sinking ship.
